Is GameMaker Free?

is-gamemaker-free

As of November 2023, GameMaker made an announcement that it is now free, replacing the previous subscription model, assuming you aren’t selling your games. If you’re wanting to make money from your GameMaker games, you’ll need to upgrade. Currently, GameMaker offers three options for licensing. We’ll go over what they are and what they offer!

Free

The Free version grants you a non-commercial license. This means you’re free to distribute your games that you’ve made with it, providing you aren’t making any money from them.

  • Best for beginners, hobbyists, or those curious about using GameMaker.
  • Cost: FREE
  • Exports:
    • GX.games
    • Desktop (Windows, Mac, Linux)
    • Web (HTML5)
    • Mobile (iOS, Android, Amazon Fire, Android TV, and tvOS)

Professional

The Professional version grants you a commercial license. It’s otherwise the same as the Free version, but you are allowed to sell the games you’ve made with it.

  • Best for indie developers and serious hobbyists.
  • Cost: $99 as a one-time purchase
  • Exports:
    • GX.games
    • Desktop (Windows, Mac, Linux)
    • Web (HTML5)
    • Mobile (iOS, Android, Amazon Fire, Android TV, and tvOS)

Enterprise

The Enterprise version also grants you a commercial license, but you’re also given console exports to distribute your games! In order to export to console with the Enterprise version, you’ll also need to be a registered developer for the selected platform.

  • Best for studios, teams, or developers targeting consoles.
  • Cost: $79.99/month or $799/year
  • Exports:
    • GX.games
    • Desktop (Windows, Mac, Linux)
    • Web (HTML5)
    • Mobile (iOS, Android, Amazon Fire, Android TV, and tvOS)
    • Console (Playstation 4 and 5, XBox One, Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2)
  • Source Code Access (subject to approval for available platforms)

Wrap Up

GameMaker is now free to use, but you’ll need to purchase a license to sell your games. You’ll still be able to put them online for free at any version, so nothing is stopping you from getting GameMaker and making some games today!
