Starting game development might seem a bit tricky at first, but it’s easier than you think. You don’t need to be an expert to begin. If you’re curious, and ready to try new things, you’ve already got what you need.
This guide will walk you through the basics, and by the end, you’ll have made your first game. It doesn’t have to be perfect—it just has to be. Game development is all about learning as you go, and this is a great place to begin.
Get GameMaker
Before you can start making games, you’ll need to download GameMaker, the program we’ll be using. It’s free, easy to set up, and works on most computers.
Once it’s ready, you’ll have everything you need to start creating your very own game.
- Create an account using the Register/Sign In button on GameMaker’s website.
- Download GameMaker by clicking on the download for your operating system.
- Install GameMaker after the download has finished. Installation works like any other software; Just open the file and follow the prompts.
- Open GameMaker!
Start a New Project

- Select New
- Select Blank Game
- Enter a Project Name. I’m calling mine “Apple Picker”.
